The case against
Sceptics counter that consciousness claims about AI are built on structural analogies, such as comparing neural network complexity to a mouse brain, that conflate computational scale with subjective experience, for which there is no evidence or even a coherent test. They worry that treating language models as potential moral patients risks diverting serious ethical and regulatory attention away from concrete, demonstrable AI harms, such as bias, job displacement and misinformation, towards speculative concerns that may say more about human tendencies to anthropomorphise convincing text generators than about any inner life the machines actually possess.
