Current AI, a nonprofit founded in February 2025, is building open, publicly available artificial intelligence infrastructure to serve as an alternative to systems controlled by major private technology companies. Chief executive Ayah Bdeir, who joined in January after leading Mozilla's AI strategy, argues that a transformative technology such as AI needs a free public option, comparable to the World Wide Web, rather than being confined to firms such as OpenAI, Google and Anthropic. The organisation is particularly focused on languages neglected by mainstream AI models, since English-dominated systems risk leaving much of the world's linguistic and cultural heritage behind.

The nonprofit has secured $400 million in committed funding, seeded with $100 million from the French government and joined by the Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, DeepMind and Salesforce, all described as funders rather than investors. Its projects include Suno Sutra, an offline pocket device developed with India's Bhashini language division that runs AI in 22 Indian languages, and a $3.2 million grant round supporting four organisations in Kenya, Lebanon and the Brazilian Amazon, covering areas such as African-language datasets for health and farming, digitisation of Arab cultural heritage, and community-controlled data initiatives. Bdeir contrasts this approach with Big Tech's multilingual efforts, which she says are driven by market expansion rather than community consent.
