Israel Says Iran Launches Missiles Toward Jordan And Warns Fire Could Spill Over
The United States launched a fresh wave of airstrikes on Iran early on Monday, hours after announcing the death of another American service member, while Iran fired missiles towards Jordan in a move Israel warned could see the conflict spill over into its own territory. The exchanges mark a further escalation in a war that has stretched into its second week, with an interim deal intended to end the fighting having collapsed and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz largely at a standstill. Both sides have struck civilian infrastructure, and Brent crude rose above $90 a barrel as the confrontation deepens a wider global energy crisis.
US Central Command said the ninth consecutive night of strikes targeted Iran's Revolutionary Guard and aimed to degrade capabilities used against shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, after 17 US service members have now died since the war began, including one killed in Iraq during the "controlled detonation" of a downed Iranian drone. Iran has retaliated against US-allied states across the region, prompting Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait to activate air defences, while Tehran said US strikes had hit the construction site of a nuclear power plant in the country's southwest. A ship also caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz near Oman, with Iran's Revolutionary Guard claiming responsibility for targeting tankers in the waterway.
