‘Riverdale’ Meets ‘The Walking Dead’ in Disney+’s New Archie Series

Disney+ has greenlit a live-action series based on Afterlife With Archie, the acclaimed horror comic that reimagines the Archie gang trapped in a zombie apocalypse, with a target release around Halloween 2027. The project reunites Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who co-created the comic with artist Francesco Francavilla, alongside Arrowverse producer Greg Berlanti, bringing the Riverdale franchise back roughly three years after that show ended.

The comic, first published in 2013, sees Jughead's dog Hot Dog resurrected as a zombie by Sabrina the Teenage Witch after being run over, sparking an undead outbreak across Riverdale that forces Archie, Betty, Veronica and friends to fight for survival. It was Archie Comics' first adult-oriented title and proved a critical and commercial hit, spawning further horror spin-offs including Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Vampironica and Archie vs. Predator. The series is executive produced by Aguirre-Sacasa and Jimmy Gibbons, Berlanti with Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman, and Jon Goldwater of Archie Comics Studios.
