New Girl actor Jake Johnson has revealed that Prince's three favourite television shows were Cheers, Roseanne and New Girl itself. The disclosure came in a new interview with The Guardian, in which Johnson recalled his time with the late musician after Prince requested a guest appearance on the sitcom in 2014, having been a fan of the show.

Prince played himself in a 2014 episode of New Girl, insisting on referring to Johnson only by his character's name, Nick. Johnson, who idolised Prince growing up in Chicago, described bonding with him over sport and television during filming. Cheers (1982-1993) and Roseanne (1988-1997, later revived) are both considered sitcom classics, while New Girl ran from 2011 to 2018. Prince died in April 2016, aged 57, and an album of previously unreleased material is due for release this year.
