Mamdani’s NYC World Cup jerseys beat the bots

Politico · 1 month ago

New York City’s limited-edition World Cup jerseys, backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, were released through an online system intended to prevent automated buyers from snapping them up. The effort matters because the $50 shirts were designed as an affordable alternative during a tournament marked by high ticket and merchandise prices, while limiting resellers’ advantage.

The city initially produced 1,500 locally made jerseys, which sold out rapidly after thousands of people queued to buy them. A later online release required customers to create an account and collect purchases in person, with 500 jerseys made available on each weekday from 8 to 16 July; the shirts came in three colourways and were produced by Brooklyn-based Mazzi Sports.

  • NYC used controlled online sales to curb jersey-buying bots.
  • The $50 shirts aimed to make World Cup merchandise more affordable.
  • Initial demand far exceeded the 1,500-jersey supply.
