Netflix's new documentary A Toxic Love Story revisits the notorious "Anaheim Craigslist case", offering what the reviewer calls a rare, jaw-dropping return to form for a genre increasingly criticised for scraping the barrel. The 88-minute film traces how deputy US marshal Ian Diaz and his partner Angela Connell became targets of a campaign of threatening emails and impersonation on Craigslist, before revealing far greater complexity behind the case as it unfolds.

The film opens with the couple receiving violent, graphic threats from a stalker calling herself "Lilithistruth", who also impersonated Angela to invite rape fantasists to attack her, leading to one assault. A digital trail led police to Ian's former fiancée, Michelle Hadley, who was arrested and held for 88 days before all charges were dropped. The documentary's later sections shift focus to further shocking revelations, including fake sonograms and false cancer claims, while also examining wider issues such as police inaction and the culture of online rape fantasists.
