Phil Foden has signed a new four-year contract with Manchester City, extending his stay until 2030 with a further 12-month option, in a deal that signals both the club's and new head coach Enzo Maresca's confidence that the 26-year-old can rediscover his best form. Foden, who joined City's academy at eight and has never played elsewhere, said committing his future "means everything" to him and that he is excited to work again with Maresca, who was Pep Guardiola's assistant during the treble-winning 2022-23 season.

The new deal follows a difficult run for Foden, who lost his regular starting spot under Guardiola, was overlooked by Thomas Tuchel for England's World Cup squad, and started only two league games after early March last season, being substituted after 58 minutes of City's FA Cup final win over Southampton. He remains City's most decorated player with 17 major honours, including six Premier League titles, one Champions League, three FA Cups, five League Cups, one Uefa Super Cup and one Club World Cup. Director of football Hugo Viana called him "a unique talent" whose development, at 26, is "still ongoing".
