Tom Morello launches Mary Morello Memorial Project in honour of late mother

NME · 4 hours ago

Tom Morello, guitarist of Rage Against The Machine, has launched the Mary Morello Memorial Project to honour his mother Mary, who died earlier this month aged 102. Announced on 20 July, eight days after he confirmed her death, the initiative aims to keep alive her lifelong legacy of activism through charitable donations and calls for direct community action, reflecting Mary's decades of campaigning for social justice causes that also shaped her son's own politically charged music career.

Funds raised will support nine organisations Mary was closely connected to, including the UFW Foundation, Doctors Without Borders, Jail Guitar Doors and the Palestine Children's Relief Fund, with further groups potentially added later. The Morello family has also urged supporters to "do as Mary did" by volunteering, protesting or engaging in political art before 1 October, which would have been her 103rd birthday, and to share their efforts on Instagram via @MaryMorelloMemorialProject. Mary Morello was a teacher and activist for more than seventy years, opposing Jim Crow laws and apartheid and supporting anti-colonial and trade union causes; her son cancelled UK and European tour dates to care for her before her death.
