A month after twin earthquakes struck Venezuela’s coastal La Guaira region, families are still searching through the remains of flattened apartment buildings for missing relatives. The continuing searches underline the scale of the disaster and the uncertainty faced by survivors as many bodies have yet to be recovered.

The earthquakes occurred on 24 June and La Guaira was the worst-hit area. Government officials say more than 5,300 people have died, while estimates suggest up to 50,000 people may still be missing; the BBC revisited affected towns to document families’ ongoing efforts.
