What’s working – and what’s not – for WSL fans?

BBC Sport · 4 hours ago

WSL supporters say the women’s game is benefiting from a more welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere and closer relationships between clubs, players and fans. Arsenal’s exceptional attendances demonstrate growing demand, while clubs such as London City Lionesses are using entertainment and engagement activities to attract new followers; however, the contrast also highlights uneven support across the league.

Interest has risen after England’s European Championship wins in 2022 and 2025, with a January 2026 YouGov study estimating 28.5 million WSL fans worldwide, split equally by gender and with nearly half aged 18 to 34. Arsenal averaged 34,000 spectators last season—41% of all WSL fixture attendees—while London City averaged just under 3,000; supporters also broadly support allowing alcohol in stands, with 70% in favour after a two-season trial.

  • WSL fans value its accessible, community-focused matchday experience.
  • Arsenal’s crowds show growth but expose uneven league-wide attendance.
  • Younger, gender-balanced audiences offer major potential for expansion.
