Onimusha: Way Of The Sword Producer Explains The 20-Year Wait For A New Game

Nintendo Life · 4 hours ago

Capcom producer Akihito Kadowaki says the two-decade gap before Onimusha: Way of the Sword was caused by competing development priorities and the growing scale of game production, rather than a lack of interest in reviving the series. The explanation matters because it confirms that teams within Capcom had long wanted to return to Onimusha, but could not secure sufficient staff and resources while major franchises took precedence.

The last main entry, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, launched in 2006. Way of the Sword is due for Switch 2 on 4 September 2026; early impressions have reportedly been positive, while a demo is already available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Capcom has not yet shown exactly how the game will perform on Switch 2.

  • Capcom says resources delayed Onimusha’s return for 20 years.
  • Internal teams reportedly wanted a new game for years.
  • Way of the Sword launches on Switch 2 in September 2026.
