Ryan Gosling to play Ghost Rider in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Developed over time first seen 2 months ago
Marvel Studios has officially confirmed that Ryan Gosling will play Ghost Rider, ending years of speculation following his repeated expressions of interest in the role. The announcement was made by studio chief Kevin Feige at San Diego Comic-Con, with Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool & Wolverine, attached to helm the standalone film, which is scheduled for release in 2028.
Gosling first voiced his desire to play the supernatural hero back in 2022 and confirmed earlier this year that talks with Marvel were under way. The character previously appeared in two live-action films from Columbia Pictures, 2007's Ghost Rider and its 2012 sequel, both starring Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze, before the film rights returned to Marvel in 2013; a different iteration, Robbie Reyes, later featured in the television series Agents of SHIELD, played by Gabriel Luna. Created in 1972 by Roy Thomas, Gary Friedrich and Mike Ploog, Ghost Rider will now make his first cinematic appearance developed by Marvel Studios itself, more than a decade after the character rejoined the company.

Ryan Gosling is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play Ghost Rider, a character created by Marvel Comics in 1972. In the original comics, Ghost Rider is Johnny Blaze, a stunt performer who strikes a deal with a demonic force and gains a flaming skull and supernatural powers as a result.
The character has appeared on screen before, notably in two films starring Nicolas Cage released by a different studio, and in a separate version on the television series Agents of SHIELD. Those earlier projects were made outside Marvel Studios' direct control, so this new film matters because it is the first Ghost Rider story that Marvel Studios itself has developed after regaining the rights.
Gosling's casting follows years of reported interest on his part, and the project will be directed by Shawn Levy, who previously worked with Marvel on Deadpool & Wolverine. It is currently set for release in 2028.
