IDW Publishing has unveiled two significant Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles announcements at Comic-Con, signalling a fresh creative direction for the franchise in 2027. Writer Gene Luen Yang will conclude his run on the main TMNT series with issue #24, handing over to incoming writer Matthew Rosenberg and artist Juann Cabal from issue #25, while the third and final instalment of the acclaimed TMNT: The Last Ronin trilogy has also been confirmed for release next year. The changes matter to fans of the long-running comic line, as they mark another creative handover following the well-received 2024 relaunch.

Speaking to IGN, both Yang and Rosenberg reflected on the transition and their affection for the property. Rosenberg, known for Astonishing X-Men, said he wants to honour the work of his predecessors, including Jason Aaron and Yang, while avoiding simply imitating their style. Yang, who reintroduced Splinter during his tenure, described TMNT as belonging to a wider "melting pot of creative energy" rather than any single writer, noting that the franchise's strength lies in its ability to support very different tones, from the gritty original Mirage comics to the more colourful 1987 cartoon.
