Joe Manganiello announces new official D&D dark fantasy setting, and it’s metal as hell
Actor Joe Manganiello has revealed details of "Death Saves: The Blood War", a new dark fantasy setting he has developed for Dungeons & Dragons, apparently as part of a grittier new "Black Label" product line from Wizards of the Coast. The announcement confirms weeks of speculation sparked by a mysterious GenCon event listing, and suggests the once-discontinued clothing line that inspired the setting's name is now being folded into an official mainline D&D product, giving fans a heavy metal, grimdark addition to the game's roster of worlds.
The setting was co-created with Mike Mearls, former co-lead designer of D&D's 5th edition, marking his first involvement with a mainline product since being laid off by Wizards of the Coast in 2023. In this world, the endless Blood War between the devils of Baator and demons of the Abyss has ended, the gods are dead, and civilisation "hangs on by a thread". Wizards of the Coast has yet to confirm full details, but a live-play debut is scheduled for Friday at 11:30 a.m. ET on the Janet Allen Stage at GenCon.
