Wellness Influencers Are Pushing ‘Natural’ and Unproven Alternatives to Adderall
Wellness brands including Graymatter Labs, Stasis, Magic Mind, Thesis and Nello are using social media influencers to promote "natural" nootropic supplements as alternatives to ADHD stimulant medications such as Adderall and Vyvanse. This coincides with the Trump administration's Health and Human Services department, under secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., pushing to restrict access to such stimulants after a "Make America Healthy Again" report criticised the "overmedicalisation" of children, raising concerns that vulnerable patients could be steered away from medically supervised treatment towards unregulated products.
The supplements, which contain ingredients such as L-theanine, ashwagandha, turmeric and B vitamins, are marketed through paid partnerships on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, often disparaging stimulants as addictive or disruptive despite these drugs being safe and effective when taken as prescribed. Unlike Adderall and Vyvanse, which are federally controlled substances requiring FDA approval, the supplements are not evaluated by the FDA before sale. None of the named companies responded to requests for comment, though TikTok confirmed removing several brand accounts for breaching health misinformation guidelines, while YouTube said the same accounts did not violate its rules; Takeda, which manufactures Vyvanse, stressed that treatment decisions should be made with a healthcare provider.
