Prince's landmark 1984 film and album Purple Rain is being adapted into a Broadway musical, following an earlier run in Minneapolis. The production marks the latest in a long series of posthumous projects sanctioned by Prince's estate since his death in 2016, further cementing his legacy nearly four decades after the original release turned him into a global star.

The musical will open at the Majestic Theatre, with previews beginning on 12 March 2027 and an official opening set for 12 April 2027. It is directed by Saheem Ali (Buena Vista Social Club), written by Peter Duchan (Dogfight), and choreographed by Ebony Williams, who worked on Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour, with Prince's longtime collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes serving as music advisors. The original Purple Rain album spent 24 consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200 and has since been certified more than 13 times platinum.
