Actor Michael B. Jordan has publicly welcomed David Jonsson as Marvel's new Black Panther, following the shock casting announcement at San Diego Comic-Con's Hall H presentation. The news matters because it confirms the direction of the franchise after Chadwick Boseman's death in 2020, with Jonsson set to play an adult version of T'Challa's son as Black Panther 3 moves towards production under returning director Ryan Coogler.

Jonsson, known for Alien: Covenant, will take on the role as the character grapples with living up to his father's legacy, with Letitia Wright's version of the character having separately joined the cast of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Black Panther 3 is scheduled for release on 15 December 2028 and will be shot on 70mm film, echoing the format's success on Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. Jordan, who played Erik Killmonger opposite Coogler in the first two films, gave his reaction at the Spider-Man: Brand New Day premiere, saying: "Oh, I love it. It's amazing!
