The cult horror-comedy franchise Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is returning to cinemas with a new instalment, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence, nearly 50 years after the 1978 original became an unlikely cult hit. The sequel brings back the murderous fruit, now equipped with "organic intelligence", and matters to fans of the franchise as it revives a series that has been dormant since its 1990s direct-to-video and animated spin-offs.

The original film, made for under $100,000, spawned several sequels, including the 1988 follow-up Return of the Killer Tomatoes, which featured a then-unknown George Clooney and introduced John Astin's villain Professor Gangreen. The new trailer promises the return of series regular Wilbur Finletter, played by J. Stephen Peace, alongside chaotic scenes of baffled authorities and desiccated victims. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence is set to open in select cinemas on 7 August.
