Marvel has invited J.M. DeMatteis, the original writer of the seminal 1987 storyline "Kraven's Last Hunt," to revisit and rewrite its ending nearly four decades later. The new one-shot, titled "What If…? Spider-Man: What If Kraven Survived His 'Last Hunt'?", answers the long-standing fan question of what would have happened had the villain Kraven not died at the story's conclusion, offering an alternative future for both him and Peter Parker.

The comic explores the psychological aftermath of Kraven's changed fate, following years of obsession before delivering a twist that recasts the classic tale in an even darker light. Rather than undermining the original, which remains intact and celebrated, the piece is presented as a fitting companion written by the one creator uniquely placed to reimagine it, and is being praised as one of Marvel's strongest "What If…?" releases in recent years.
