A French resident, Georgie Schmid, has described the devastating loss of his villa near Le Porge after a wildfire tore through the pine forests behind his property, despite a desperate hours-long effort to save it. Schmid, his brother and a neighbour used garden hoses and a sprinkler system alongside four firefighters to hold back the flames, reflecting the wider destruction wrought by wildfires sweeping through the Gironde region of France.

The battle initially appeared successful, with the fire dying down and retreating after around two hours, but it ultimately overwhelmed the property, leaving Schmid to survey the burnt-out wreckage of his home.
