Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, the long-gestating sequel to the acclaimed animated series, has become Paramount Plus's number one film both in the US and worldwide within days of its release. The success is notable given the film's troubled path to screens: Paramount cancelled its planned wide theatrical release in December in favour of a straight-to-streaming debut, and the entire movie subsequently leaked online after an April 2026 server breach. Its strong streaming performance is being seen as vindication for a project many fans felt deserved better treatment.

The film, produced by Flying Bark Productions and Studio Mir, is set 13 years after the defeat of Fire Lord Ozai and follows the original characters as adults navigating new roles, with Zuko now ruling as Fire Lord, Toph running an earthbending academy, and Sokka working as an inventor. It centres on an older Aang, voiced by Eric Nam, grappling with his identity as the last surviving Air Nomad after discovering Tagah (voiced by Dave Bautista), another airbender long preserved in ice. Reviewers have praised the animation and action sequences as well as the film's deeper exploration of Aang's cultural loss, a theme the original television series never fully resolved.
