French electronic musician Kavinsky, best known for his synthwave track ‘Nightcall’, has died aged 50. Fans have responded by revisiting the song’s use in the opening sequence of Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2011 film Drive, describing it as central to the film’s distinctive mood and enduring cultural impact.

Kavinsky, whose real name was Vincent Belorgey, was reportedly found at his Paris home on 28 July after a neighbour raised concerns. Le Figaro reported that a stroke was believed to be the cause of death and that he had recently experienced severe headaches; ‘Nightcall’ also featured in his 2024 Paris Olympics closing-ceremony performance.
