Former Loretto Hospital executive Anosh Ahmed, accused of involvement in a $15 million embezzlement scheme, fled the United States after being charged and was later arrested in Serbia. The case matters because it concerns alleged misuse of funds from a Chicago safety-net hospital and could lead to Ahmed’s extradition to face US federal charges.

Ahmed, Loretto’s former chief financial officer, was indicted in 2024 alongside former hospital official Heather Bergdahl and medical-supply company owner Sameer Suhail. Prosecutors allege that false invoices and payment requests were used between 2018 and 2022 to divert more than $15 million; Ahmed also faces separate allegations linked to a much larger fraudulent COVID-19 testing scheme. He reportedly remained in Serbian custody after his November 2025 arrest while US authorities sought extradition.
