Vertical’s forthcoming film The Magic Faraway Tree updates Enid Blyton’s 1940s children’s stories for contemporary audiences, according to director Ben Gregor and stars Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy. The team says the adaptation retains the books’ sense of adventure, warmth and family while encouraging children to spend time outdoors and reconnect with nature rather than screens.

The story follows three siblings who move to the English countryside and discover a magical tree whose inhabitants can visit fantastical lands in the sky, including the Land of Goodies. Garfield and Foy play their parents, who leave the city after Polly quits her job rather than help develop a data-gathering smart fridge; Gregor also said the production built an edible set so child actors could physically interact with it.
