A New York school district has paused plans to introduce a humanoid AI teaching assistant after concerns were raised about student data privacy and controversies involving its manufacturer, Realbotix. The decision highlights the scrutiny facing schools as they consider using lifelike AI technology in classrooms, particularly where children’s personal information and safeguarding are involved.

The robot, called Sally, is a 5ft 2in humanoid intended to support teaching for older pupils at Salamanca High School. The district said the $57,000 robot was not meant to replace teachers, but it has halted the rollout while reviewing the concerns surrounding the technology and company.
