Lawyers for Luigi Mangione, who is accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, have argued that proposed media-access rules for his forthcoming state trial are unconstitutional. They say the restrictions could undermine the principle of an open public trial by allowing the court to “hand-pick” which journalists may attend.

The dispute concerns press access during jury selection and other trial proceedings in New York. Prosecutors have previously said they recovered a gun and notebook containing writings about corporate America and the health-insurance industry after Thompson’s killing; Mangione faces state murder charges.
