Joey King and Maisie Williams say they felt a “massive responsibility” joining Practical Magic 2, as they take over the roles of Sally Owens’s daughters from the 1998 film. Their comments underline the pressure on the sequel to satisfy fans of the original while expanding the Owens family story.

King and Williams play Kylie and Antonia, previously portrayed by Evan Rachel Wood and Alexandra Artrip. The sequel, directed by Susanne Bier and written by Akiva Goldsman, Georgia Pritchett and Kelly Marcel, reunites Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as Sally and Gillian Owens; it is due to premiere on 11 September. Wood has said she is saddened not to return, particularly because she had hoped to revisit the cast and house as an adult.
