HBO's acclaimed anthology series True Detective was originally conceived as something quite different: a literary sequel to creator Nic Pizzolatto's 2010 crime novel Galveston. This origin helps explain why the show, particularly its celebrated first season, diverges from conventional television crime procedurals by prioritising psychology, philosophy and character development over the mechanics of solving a mystery.

Pizzolatto, an established novelist known for his short story collection Between Here and the Yellow Sea and the novel Galveston, initially wanted to expand on the morally complex world he had created in the book. As the project developed, however, its ambitious structure, multiple perspectives and shifting timelines outgrew the format of a single novel, leading Pizzolatto to pitch it to HBO as a television series instead. He pitched it to executives as a Galveston adaptation while drafting the True Detective pilot, and HBO commissioned an eight-episode first season in 2012, for which Pizzolatto wrote a script exceeding 500 pages. A separate Galveston film adaptation starring Elle Fanning was eventually released in 2018.
