Scott Hylands, the Canadian actor best known for playing Detective Kevin "O.B." O'Brien in the 1980s series Night Heat, has died aged 83. He died on 29 July, his son Luke Hylands announced, having been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in October 2021; he had long lived on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia. Night Heat, filmed in Toronto and conceived by former New York detective Sonny Grosso, was notable as the first Canadian original drama series to air simultaneously in the United States, and Hylands's role marked a rare turn as a good guy after years playing villains on American television.

Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, in 1943, Hylands studied at the University of British Columbia before moving to New York and San Francisco to pursue acting, making his screen debut in 1969's Daddy's Gone a-Hunting. His long career spanned films such as Earthquake and The Boys in Company C, and television roles on The Streets of San Francisco, NYPD Blue, The X-Files and Stargate SG-1, as well as a notable turn as Ennis Stuccy in the third season of FX's Fargo in 2017. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Veronica, his son Luke and his daughter Rebecca.
