New video evidence has cast doubt on the official account of the unsolved killing of 16-year-old Antonio Mays Jr., who was shot seven times in the early hours of 29 June 2020 at the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP) zone in Seattle. An 18-month investigation by NPR's Embedded podcast, The Seattle Times and KUOW reviewed more than a dozen videos and found that the widely accepted narrative — that armed volunteer security opened fire because a stolen Jeep carrying Antonio had attacked the encampment — is not supported by the evidence, since no shots appear to have come from the vehicle and no weapons, bullets or shell casings were recovered from it or its occupants.

The footage shows people at the scene appearing to collect shell casings while saying "no evidence", and police staying back for hours, allowing bystanders to contaminate the crime scene before officers arrived at 7:45am. Also in the Jeep was 14-year-old Robert West, who was critically injured, and a third, unidentified teenager who was grazed by a bullet and fled. Six years on, no one has been arrested or charged, investigators say witnesses from CHOP have largely refused to cooperate, and former Seattle police chief Shon Barnes, who called for those present to come forward, has since resigned. Antonio had travelled from Southern California days earlier to join the protests, telling his father in a note that he was "fighting for a cause".
