New Spider-Man film sees second-biggest ever global opening weekend
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has recorded the second-biggest global opening weekend in box office history, taking $927m (£687m) and easily covering its estimated $225m production budget. Starring real-life couple Tom Holland and Zendaya, the film provides a timely boost for Disney and Marvel following a run of underperforming releases, ahead of December's much-anticipated Avengers: Doomsday.
The film, which continues Peter Parker's story after 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, took $335m in North America alone, the second-best domestic opening on record, and trails only Avengers: Endgame's 2019 haul of over $1.2bn. It has received strong reviews, with some critics calling it Holland's best performance in the role, and arrives amid a broader cinema recovery, with North American box office takings on track to exceed $10bn for the first time since 2019, aided by hits including Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
