Chilean filmmakers Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña will world premiere their third feature film, Donkey Princess (Princesa Burro), in the international competition at the 79th Locarno Film Festival on 7 August. Known for The Wolf House and The Hyperboreans, and for their collaborations with Ari Aster, the pair have made an envelope-pushing fairy tale that shifts film genres and periods as its story unfolds, and The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively unveiled the trailer.

The film follows Diana, princess of an ancient kingdom ruled by her father King Arthur, who has forbidden love; when she falls for a man named Lalo, the king banishes him, prompting Diana to use a magical bracelet to travel through parallel worlds in search of him, each one transforming the film's genre. The cast is led by Antonia Giesen, with Andrew Bargsted and Francisco Melo, and the screenplay was co-written by Alejandra Moffat with the directors. Loosely inspired by Charles Perrault's Donkeyskin tale and its later Jacques Demy film adaptation, the movie was shot by cinematographer Benjamín Echazarreta and edited by Soledad Salfate, Maria Salazar and the two directors, with Bendita Film Sales handling international sales.
