‘Warhammer 40,000’ Animated Series in Development at Amazon, Henry Cavill to Produce (EXCLUSIVE)

Variety · 4 hours ago

Amazon MGM Studios, Blur Studios and Games Workshop are developing an animated "Warhammer 40,000" event series, Variety has learned exclusively, with actor Henry Cavill signed on as executive producer. The show is a spinoff of Prime Video's animated anthology "Secret Level," which included a well-received "Warhammer 40,000" episode when it launched in late 2024, and is being developed alongside a separate live-action "Warhammer 40,000" series that Cavill is also attached to lead.

Dave Wilson, who directed the original "Secret Level" episode, is co-creating and directing the new series alongside John Orloff, known for "Masters of the Air" and "Band of Brothers." Plot details remain under wraps, though the series will centre on the Deathwatch, an elite group of Space Marines who hunt alien threats. Alongside Cavill, executive producers include "Secret Level" creator Tim Miller and Wilson for Blur Studios, Natalie Viscuso, Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, and Andy Smillie of Games Workshop. The project adds to Amazon's growing slate of game-based adaptations, which includes "Fallout," an upcoming "Tomb Raider" series with Sophie Turner, a "God of War" show currently recasting its lead, and series in development based on "Life Is Strange," "Mass Effect" and "Wolfenstein."

Amazon MGM Studios and Games Workshop, the British firm behind the tabletop wargame Warhammer 40,000, are working on a new animated series set in that universe, produced in partnership with visual effects studio Blur Studios. Actor Henry Cavill, a long-time fan of the franchise, is attached as an executive producer, alongside a separate live-action Warhammer 40,000 project he is also involved with.

The animated show builds on "Secret Level," an anthology series on Amazon's Prime Video that featured a well-received Warhammer 40,000 instalment when it debuted in late 2024. That episode's director, Dave Wilson, is returning to co-create and direct the new series with writer John Orloff, whose past credits include war dramas "Masters of the Air" and "Band of Brothers."

Warhammer 40,000 is a science-fiction setting created by Games Workshop, best known through its miniature war games, and has built a large, dedicated fanbase over several decades. The project is part of a wider trend of major studios turning popular games into television series, with Amazon already producing shows based on titles such as Fallout and developing several others.
