Investigators' release of ransom notes connected to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie has been likened by an expert to the approach used in the Unabomber case, where publishing the suspect's writings ultimately helped crack the investigation. The comparison comes as scrutiny grows over the Pima County Sheriff's Department's handling of the case, with retired FBI agent Jason Pack highlighting early missteps in the inquiry.

Pack said officials failed to properly secure the crime scene, allowing reporters and delivery drivers access in the investigation's early stages. He argued that releasing the newly disclosed ransom notes publicly mirrors the strategy that helped identify Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, whose manifesto was published and subsequently recognised by his brother, leading to his arrest.
