Sony Pictures has confirmed it currently has no Spider-Man spinoff films in active development, suggesting the studio's so-called "Sony-verse" of villain-led movies may have run its course. Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman told Variety that while there were plans to explore other characters from the Spider-Man universe, audiences simply weren't satisfied by recent entries such as Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter, prompting a rethink of the strategy. This matters because it likely closes the door, for now, on further expansion of a cinematic universe Sony had invested heavily in since 2018.

The spinoff series began with Tom Hardy's Venom in 2018 and grew to include Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Morbius, Madame Web, Venom: The Last Dance and Kraven the Hunter, though a planned crossover with Spider-Man himself never materialised. Kraven the Hunter, released in December 2024, proved the weakest performer of the run both critically and commercially, and Rothman acknowledged that "the audience is the boss" in explaining the halt. An animated Venom film remains in the works, and the mainline Spider-Man franchise continues to thrive, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day recently setting box office records.
