An 82-year-old charity cyclist, Bob Montgomery, has died a day after completing a 3,300-mile (5,300km) ride across Australia to raise funds for motor neurone disease research. His family described the death as "unexpected" but "peaceful", saying he was still "passionately sharing his message" only hours before he passed away, with his wife Jenny by his side.

Montgomery and his 18-year-old grandson, Tom Malcolm, undertook the six-week ride, dubbed "One Last Ride", from Broome in Western Australia to Bowral, south-west of Sydney, raising around A$105,000 (£55,000) for MND NSW. It was his sixth fundraising ride for the charity, a cause he said was personal after losing a cousin to the disease, and across his rides he had raised almost A$300,000. He arrived in Bowral on Sunday to applause from his community, but suffered a medical episode shortly after a family celebration in Sydney on Monday; MND NSW chief executive Liam O'Meara paid tribute to him as a "cherished friend and tireless supporter" of the charity.
