The Fuego volcano in Guatemala erupted, sending lava and ash into the air and prompting the evacuation of at least two villages on its slopes. Fuego, one of the most active volcanoes in the Western Hemisphere, is located just 16km from Antigua, a popular tourist city, raising concerns for both residents and visitors in the area.

Disaster management agency Conred issued a nationwide orange alert, the second-highest level, warning that further pyroclastic flows and ash clouds were possible. Pyroclastic currents continued flowing down the volcano's south-eastern slope into Tuesday, and authorities urged people to keep windows and doors closed, while nearby schools cancelled lessons. The volcano previously erupted in 2018, killing more than 200 people, many caught in pyroclastic flows in the Las Lajas ravine, underscoring the danger of the current activity.
