John Douglas, guitarist and vocalist of Scottish indie rock band Trashcan Sinatras, has died aged 63 after a brief illness. The band announced his death on social media, saying he passed away peacefully in the early hours of Monday 3 August 2026, surrounded by loved ones. His death comes just days after the release of the band's new album, marking a poignant end to a decades-long musical career.

Douglas, who joined founding members Francis Reader and Davy Hughes shortly after the band formed in Irvine in 1986, was also joined by his brother Stephen Douglas and bandmate Paul Livingston. He played on all seven of the group's studio albums, including the 1993 favourite "I've Seen Everything", and released a solo debut album in 2024. The news arrived only four days after Trashcan Sinatras put out "Ever the Optimist", their first full-length record in a decade.
