An extended heatwave and prolonged drought across central Europe have caused water levels on major rivers including the Danube and Rhine to fall sharply, disrupting river cruises with little advance warning. Several vessels have become stranded or unable to complete planned routes, forcing operators to alter itineraries and leaving passengers scrambling to adjust their travel plans.

According to the European Drought Observatory, the continent experienced "above-average temperatures with an extensive and prolonged heatwave" during the first half of July, with dry conditions persisting into the following weeks. The observatory's latest drought map shows the affected area stretching across much of central Europe, with low water levels making sections of key waterways difficult or impossible for cruise ships to navigate normally.
