Rita Wilson has opened up about the outdated marriage advice her mother once gave her, explaining that ignoring it helped steer her towards her eventual husband, Tom Hanks. The 69-year-old actress made the comments during an appearance on Michelle Obama's podcast, "In My Opinion", reflecting on how her mother's traditional views on marriage nearly led her down a different path before she met Hanks.

Wilson revealed she had been engaged once before meeting Hanks, admitting that had she gone through with that marriage, she believes she "would have been divorced within a year." She said she had initially believed that following her mother's old-fashioned guidance was simply "what you were" supposed to do, before ultimately breaking from that advice. Wilson and Hanks have now been married for 34 years, having recently spoken publicly about what they consider the secret to their long-lasting relationship.
