The Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally rebooting the X-Men with a film directed by Jake Schreier, following years of small teases and the 2024 release of Deadpool & Wolverine, which brought Fox's X-Men universe into the MCU as a separate multiverse. The new team faces a significant challenge, however, as it must reintroduce characters and concepts already familiar to audiences from more than two decades of Fox-produced films, while inevitably inviting comparisons to those earlier, well-established performances.

The original X-Men franchise began in 2000 and was praised for treating its source material seriously, with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Patrick Stewart as Professor X becoming closely identified with their roles over numerous sequels. Matthew Vaughn's 2011 prequel X-Men: First Class further deepened the lore, and since the MCU has confirmed the Fox universe still exists canonically within its multiverse, with actors including Stewart and Ian McKellen set to return in Avengers: Doomsday, any recast MCU team will be judged directly against its predecessors rather than starting with a clean slate.
