Jony Ive’s first OpenAI gadget is reportedly a hockey puck-sized smart speaker

The Verge · 2 weeks ago

Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has offered new details on the first hardware device OpenAI is developing with former Apple design chief Jony Ive, describing it as a battery-powered, doughnut-shaped smart speaker roughly the size of a hockey puck. The gadget, which has no screen, is expected to work as a voice-driven AI companion powered by more advanced models than ChatGPT's current voice mode, and marks OpenAI's first step into a planned "family of devices" built around its chatbot technology.

According to Gurman's sources, the device will be easy to carry around the home in one hand, similar to Amazon's discontinued Tap speaker, and will feature moving parts, lights, a camera system and other sensors, some of which will move independently to indicate when it is responding to the user. It is reportedly slated to launch in 2027 and could cost more than $300, though Gurman notes it will look and feel distinct from Apple's products despite the ongoing legal dispute between Apple and OpenAI.
