Lionsgate Sees Revenue Surge From ‘Michael’, ‘The Housemaid’ In June Quarter
Lionsgate Studios reported a strong fiscal first quarter, with motion picture revenue more than doubling to $587 million and profit hitting a Q1record of $105 million, driven largely by the billion-dollar global box office of "Michael" and strong ancillary earnings from "The Housemaid". The results, which beat Wall Street forecasts, matter because they bolster the studio's standing amid ongoing media industry consolidation, with Lionsgate long seen as a potential takeover target that has become a more attractive, "digestible" prospect as a pure content company.
Total quarterly revenue rose nearly 50% to $777 million, while television production revenue and profit declined to $189 million and $10.2 million respectively due to the timing of episodic deliveries; the company expects scripted deliveries to double in fiscal 2028. Net loss narrowed sharply to $29 million from $107 million, and shares rose 2.4% to $13.26 in late trading, extending a rally that has taken the stock from under $6 to nearly $17 over the past year amid takeover speculation. CEO Jon Feltheimer pointed to the company's franchise strategy, with sequels to both "Michael" and "The Housemaid" already in development alongside upcoming releases including "Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping" and Mel Gibson's "The Resurrection of the Christ Part One".
