Jon Bernthal's 2015 crime thriller Sicario has become an unexpected streaming success after arriving on HBO Max earlier this month, drawing fresh attention as the actor enjoys a career high with roles in The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Taylor Sheridan, the film stars Emily Blunt as an FBI agent drawn into a morally murky operation against a Mexican drug cartel, with Bernthal appearing in a supporting role as her police officer boyfriend.

The film, which earned a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score and three Academy Award nominations on its original release, is currently the seventh most-watched movie on HBO Max in the United States, according to tracker FlixPatrol. Its 2018 sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, failed to match the original's critical success, and a third instalment, reportedly titled Sicario: Capos, remains in development, though Bernthal's minor character makes his return to the franchise unlikely.
