Universal & Sony Music Take Legal Action in Canada Against ‘Parasitic’ Streaming App Musi

Billboard · 2 weeks ago

Sony Music Group and Universal Music Group are launching legal action in Canada against the developers of Musi, a streaming app that they say illegally sources music from YouTube without artists' authorisation. The case, brought with the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry and Music Canada, marks a fresh escalation in the majors' campaign against so-called "parasitic" apps that mimic legitimate services while depriving artists of royalties.

Musi replicates YouTube and YouTube Music content but with fewer or no adverts, and reportedly bypasses technical protections while charging users through subscriptions and advertising. It was removed from Apple's App Store in 2024 over copyright complaints, though existing users can still access it. The move follows a similar Canadian legal victory earlier this year, when Music Canada won a Federal Court order blocking stream-ripping sites such as Y2Mate, YTMP3 and Savefrom, which had over 1.7 million monthly users, as part of a broader push by the Canadian music industry to strengthen copyright enforcement, including around AI.
