Student shoots multiple people at a high school in Thailand, authorities say
A 14-year-old student opened fire at Debsirin Nonthaburi School near Bangkok, Thailand, on the morning of Friday 7 August 2026, killing several school staff before turning the gun on himself. Officials said the boy had earlier shot dead his grandparents at the family home before attending school with the weapon, which was legally registered to his grandfather. The attack has intensified concern over gun ownership in Thailand, which has one of the highest rates of civilian firearm possession in Asia.
At least five school staff members, including teachers and administrators, were killed at the school, in addition to the two grandparents killed at home, with 23 people wounded, ten of them critically. The shooting occurred at around 10am local time, with the attacker firing more than 20 shots; a witness described an initial single gunshot followed by a pause and then continuous rapid fire. Relatives said the teenager, who lived with his grandparents, usually kept to himself but was considered a good student, and officials noted he had shown signs of school-related stress, though a clear motive remains under investigation. Classes at the school have been suspended until 14 August.
