He said he remains proud of the project and believes it has brought enjoyment to audiences, while urging perspective beyond its opening weekend and immediate criticism.

The film has a 31% Rotten Tomatoes score and 42% on Metacritic, while Variety’s review said it earned a place alongside the original despite not replacing it. Disney chief executive Josh D’Amaro acknowledged softer-than-expected box office performance on 5 August, though he said franchise investments can benefit other parts of the company; Variety reports the film could lose at least $100 million theatrically.
