Netflix’s latest mid-budget science-fiction thriller, The Last House, has reportedly made an immediate impact after its release, signalling the streamer’s shift away from costly original blockbusters towards star-led genre films with more modest budgets. Directed by Louis Leterrier, the film follows a family trapped in their home after a mysterious global event leaves humanity unable to escape indoors.

The film stars Wagner Moura and Greta Lee as the parents of two children, combining an enclosed-survival premise with alien-invasion-style stakes. Collider places the release alongside recent Netflix successes including The Rip, War Machine, Thrash and Apex, arguing that the company’s newer strategy is delivering stronger results than earlier expensive projects such as Red Notice, The Gray Man and The Electric State.
