Anthony Michael Hall Says John Hughes Wanted a ‘Breakfast Club’ Sequel Where the Original Cast Is ‘In Their 30s’
Anthony Michael Hall has said that John Hughes once considered making a sequel to “The Breakfast Club” that would reunite its five main characters in their thirties and working lives. The idea matters because it suggests Hughes contemplated revisiting one of his best-known films with its original cast, though Hall said he did not know whether a script was ever written.
Hall said Hughes discussed the potential sequel during a phone call around 1988, three years after “The Breakfast Club” was released; Hughes died in 2009. Hall played Brian Johnson alongside Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez and Ally Sheedy in the 1985 film about unlikely friendships formed during detention, and also worked with Hughes on “Sixteen Candles” and “Weird Science”.
- Hughes reportedly considered a grown-up “Breakfast Club” reunion.
- Hall recalls discussing it with Hughes in 1988.
- It is unclear whether Hughes wrote a sequel.
